ABOUT HIM:

BING CROSBY (Harry Lillis Crosby) (1903-1977)
Regarded as the greatest of the crooners, Crosby was born into a struggling family in Tacoma, near Seattle. He played and sang in his high school band, and in his early twenties arrived in Los Angeles as a vaudeville performer. He scored his first hit with a version of Ol Man River in 1928, and three years later began getting film roles. He starred in the 1936 hit Pennies From Heaven, and in the 1940s starred with Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour in their highly successful series of “Road” movies, starting with The Road To Singapore (1940). A smooth-voiced, skilled interpreter of songs, he sang a broad palate of material, from jazz to show tunes to religious songs and country and western. Some of his best-known songs include Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?, You're Getting to Be a Habit With Me, You Are My Sunshine, Dont Fence Me In, and Deep in the Heart of Texas. He also recorded the Christmas carol Silent Night, with sales in the millions, but is probaby best remembered for the Irving Berlin song White Christmas (1942) which became a Christmas best-seller for decades, with sales in the tens of millions. With his affable, easy-going persona, Crosby was admired by fans around the world.
