CHRISSIE HYNDE

MAJOR MUSICIANS - USA

CHRISSIE HYNDE
(1951 - )
Born in Akron, Ohio, she became a fan of US proto-punk outifts The Velvet Underground and The Stooges while studying at university. She moved to Britain in the 1970s, and inspired by the impact of punk outfits such as Sex Pistols and The Clash, formed her band the Pretenders. They drew more on R&B, and were more musically accomlished than many other New Wave bands, and from 1980 onwards had hits with songs such as Kid, Brass In Pocket, and Back On The Chain Gang. Brass In Pocket’s video clip, with Hynde as a sultry waitress, turned her into one of new wave’s best recognised stars. The Pretenders lost members to drugs during the 1980s, but made a comeback with a successful live album in the 1990s. In recent years Hynde has become increasingly involved in the cause of prevention of cruelty to animals.
