"PUNK" / "PUNK ROCK"

Punk (AKA Punk Rock) is a rock music genre that was derived from garage music that developed from the mid to late 70's in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Its raw and usually distorted warts and all sound was matched with an anarchistic philosophy by the bands and music artist that formed the core part of this music movement. An aggressive and ragtag fashion sense or anti-fashion sense also usually accompanied the music.

Punk's stripped down garage like music style and 'in your face' message of its lyrics along with its usually frenetic and urgent sense of musical delivery created clear indications of what was punk. Anything that deviated from these basic values that was derived from the punk rock movement was usually placed within the New Wave (also known as Post Punk by music history revisionists) music bracket which usually offered a more sophisticated version of punk.

At times the lines of distinction ast to what constitured Punk or New Wave became blurred and some bands like The Clash and The Stranglers were considered to be perhaps belonging to both movements whereas bands the Sex Pistols and The Damned were clearly punk and bands like Magazine and XTC were clearly New Wave acts.
