CHRIS BLACKWELL

MUSIC INDUSTRY PEOPLE - UK

Chris Blackwell is one of the co-founders of Island Records. He is listed in the top 30 wealthiest music industry figures in Britain with a value of 80 million pounds (Bloomberg, 2011). Born in the UK, but raised as a white Jamaican himself, a key part of his success in his early years was winning the trust of the local music community in Jamaica towards the music business (which had very little trust there at the time) to being able to attract key talent to his record label such as Bob Marley. As Melody Maker put it: Chris Blackwell was 'a genuine fan and shrewd business man, Someone who can exercise discretion in weighing up the music, and who can bring a little, say, taste into the business end.'
