ABOUT HIM

Elvis Costello (Birth name: Declan McManus) (1954 - Present) is one of the stars of British New Wave music of the mid-late 1970s. He established himself in the Liverpool pub rock scene before taking London and the world. His first album My Aim Is True (1977) included the song his fans are still most likely to sing after a few jars - the sweetly barbed ballad Alison. In the same year he released his first hit single, Watching The Detectives, a Godard-like homage to the detective movie genre. The following year saw the release of his second album This Year’s Model, which included the oft-quoted track (I Don’t Want To Go To) Chelsea - and his legions of fans prayed he never would. Already established as a gifted songwriter and high-energy performer in his trademark Buddy Holly-style spectacles, he appeared set for a longer than average career for a New Wave artist, and that is precisely what transpired. Over the following years be produced many standout tracks, including another anthem of the punk gen, Oliver’s Army, and like Bob Dylan later picked a path through country and western, with tracks including A Good Year For The Roses. The Eighties produced many more classic Costello songs, including Shipbuidling, and The Comedians, which was also recorded by Roy Orbison. The Nineties were marked by his collaboration with veteran songwriter Burt Bacharach, and Costello touring the world presenting a new show of acoustic tracks. In 2003 he and his band The Attractions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the following year he married Canadian-born jazz singer Diana Krall.
